Statement of Need: The Northwest region suffer from the absence of a grassroots-led system of supporting the various needs that is centralized on the main island of Weno, seat of the Chuuk State government. Without a grassroots-led centralized system has contributed to a cycle of dependency on government hand outs and dysfunctional government services to the outer islands for educational reform, healthcare, community development, and economic empowerment opportunities. To empower themselves, the leaders agreed to found a non-governmental organization called Fanapi Center (www.fanapi.org/center) located at the Bayview Building on the main island of Weno chartered by the FSM. An all-volunteer Board of Directors has been formed representing the various needs in the outer islands (education, government, cultural preservation, youth, business, etc). The Board of Directors is responsible for providing the overall leadership, fiduciary duties, vision, policy setting, and development for the Fanapi Center’ services and programs. While the Directors are highly committed and motivated to their role, they as a team are in need of proper training to effectively lead the Fanapi Center as a nonprofit organization.
Program Objective: Inspired by the traditional training program (pwo) of master navigators, the Pwo Board of Directors Training program aims to bring together the Board members and some key stakeholders for a week-long leadership training retreat. Facilitated by an experienced team of consultants, the training would enable the participants to strategize, plan, and formulate the bylaws and other chartering documents required by the Federated States of Micronesia for the Fanapi Center to become a registered and chartered nonprofit organization in the FSM.
Funding Need: Funds are needed for the professional fees for the trainers, transportation expenses for the facilitators and Board members, training facilities rental, room & board for the Directors, training materials, printing expenses. To enable full and uninterrupted participation, the training will take place at a local venue on Weno during the Christmas Break.
